Is that really an office? It is not unexpected to walk into an office and see a little bit of clutter here and there. It really is pretty typical to see stacks of files or a coffee mug or two filling the desk space. There is a point though when it crosses the line from messy but acceptable to a complete pigsty.~~ At the college where I work, the biology department office has crossed that line. The building has not even been up for a year and the secretary has managed to make her desk and every other surface of the room look like a Staples threw up on it. There are file folders everywhere and papers stacked so high, I honestly wonder how they don't fall over. And the sad thing is, it makes the department as a whole look bad. The office is where people visiting come for directions to other offices and where students come to ask important questions. When the secretary looks like she couldn't file a paper to save her life it makes student wary to take her advice. She is also the person who does all of the ordering of supplies for the different labs and such. It takes her forever to pull up an order she put in a week ago, so you might as well just not even ask. She doesn't know where anything is and is usually rude about requests that you make, no matter how simple. So between an unpleasant secretary and a horrible office space, the biology department as a whole ends up looking like a mess. I feel that it could hurt a business as well if a similar situation were to occur. It is not professional, and really there are many qualified people out there who could get the job done. Make sure if you own a business that it really is important to have a good secretary with good work ethic or you make yourself and your business look bad. |
