It's not only advisable to be an indispensable officemate by having all those little things that your officemates or boss would probably need but don't have. You need to be an indispensable employee. You need to become an expert in your field so your company won't let go of you even in this cutthroat world.
Some heads of companies say that there is no such thing as an indispensable employee because any employee can be replaced. I refuse to believe this because not everyone can be experts in all fields. Some people can't even be masters in one field. Given this premise, then it would be hard to find an expert who can fill in the shoes of your expert employee once you let go of him. So management has to take care of its experts in order to keep their business.
